On digging around in the mud onshore, lifting rocks and parting seaweed, we eventually discovered what the bears were feeding on. They were catching Gunnel Fish, small, elongated, eel-like fish that inhabit the intertidal zone.
Gunnel Fish.
Meanwhile, Mum was showing her daughter how to catch them on the shore......
"That's it dear. You are getting the hang of it, unlike your brother."
"Mum, I've caught a huge Razor Clam."
"It's a stick dear."
"I think you had better go and give your brother some lessons."
"Mum, it's not a stick, it's a ferocious Razor Clam, I'm telling you. Its sharper than RP's wit."
"It's a stick dear. How many times do I have to tell you."
"You had better get over to him quickly before he gets carried away."
"You mean it's not a Razor Clam?"
"OK Mum, I'm on my way."
"Now watch me. You look under the water to see the fish."
"Then use your claws like this to scrape them up."
