Bit of sad news from the park this morning. It seems Robin (one of Gina's orphaned cubs who would be near full grown now) was transferred from Kuzuko to the holding boma in the main area of Addo. He somehow escaped and was killed by other lions this morning :(

Further news about what happened... it seems the 'escape' was in fact an attempt to introduce this young male back to Addo
SANParks/Addo's official comment regarding the death of Gina's sub-adult male cub at Rooidam earlier this week.
For the past four months we have been looking for a good home for this animal since he was ready to go into the next phase of his rehabilitation. Unfortunately no one was interested in him and those who were did not meet our conservation criteria. This effectively meant that we needed to take him to the next level within his rehabilitation back into the wild.
For months now he has gotten to know Norman and Zwai, who regularly paid him a visit. Initially they were dead set on hurting him and with time they seemed to accept him. Most recently Aardlam paid him a lot of attention and with him coming to the fence to seek her attention.
With this all in mind we decided to set him free when the right opportunity presented itself. He was now a year and three months old and it was important for us to get him out of the boma while he still had wild traits. The longer we kept him in the boma the more difficult it was going to be to rehabilitate him. We also had a collar fitted to him, which we intended to use to monitor him regularly and supplement his diet.
On the night of the 12th Aardlam was outside his boma and they were communicating through the fence. A decision was made to open the gate and see how she would interact with him. We also knew that the two males were at Woodlands and we were ready to intervene should we need to.
Upon opening the gate the young male immediately left the boma and joined Aardlam as if she were a long lost relative. This was the perfect introduction for the two. We proceeded to stay with the two lions for an hour and a half. After this they both moved off into the bush heading in a westerly direction.
We were confident that the males knew the young male and that he was large enough should they threaten him that he could evade them.
It was to our horror that we woke up on Tuesday morning to the death of this young male. The males had found their way to him and most likely were responsible for his death. Video footage of Aardlam ripping at his lifeless body is extremely confusing and does not make any sense when compared to the previous day’s events.
The park management went to great lengths to save the three orphaned lions a year ago. We were very attached to this young male lion, who showed incredible resolve in his trying period prior to the boma and in the boma. We are saddened by his death but want the public to know that we only had his best interest at heart.

Sorry for asking, PJL, don't know the whole story, but what is the point of releasing "rehabilitated" cubs if there is an ongoing population outside?

It's a good question as to why they decided to move this young lion back to the main game area - perhaps they were worried that he was approaching sexual maturity and they didn't want him near his 2 sisters over in Kuzuko.
In terms of releasing a 'rehabilitated' cub - he was originally part of the Addo lion population until his mother Gina died about a year ago, so he kind of belongs there.
