Re: Aat&Elly 2016: 03- Special, Weird and Rare
Another wonderful episode.
Yeah we have also seen some elephants lying down on the ground on previous trips. Was also wondering if they are dead and then out of the blue the female chased them up and then the whole heard walked off.

Great sightings Aat.
Funnily enough, we've seen more SSJ's than BBJ's in our last few trips!

Thanks Okie,
We were surprized since it was the first time (except some babies) we saw Ellies sleeping this way. It was really remarkable how fast the big bulls we saw got on their feet.

About sleeping ellies , it is quite common - . We have seen it quite a few times - especially babies . They like to have a little sleep just like human babies
A couple years ago , we came round a bend , and there was a car , and the people stopped us saying , pointing to an ellie lying a few hundred meters away . The guy said the ellie suddenly lay down and he thinks it is dead But through my binocs I could see its ears moving , and suddenly he just got up and left
And our last trip in September , we came onto a really big guy , lying next to the road about 200 meters from Shingwedzi camp gate . We sat with him for at least ten minutes , taking pics of him . And we watched a youngster on Shongololo loop for about 15 minutes in the river bed lying there as if he was dead . One of the females came to it , smelling and feeling around him , but he just slept

Thanks Alf. It's funny to see "new" things every trip... and it makes all come again and again...

Thx Flutterby,
I think it fits for more sightings... sometimes you see some species several times and then you don't see them during several other trips.
I often read stories / TT's where people come 3 , 4 times a year an don't see wilddogs for years, where others see them at least one time per trip. Well, like I replied to Alf, it makes us come again and again ...

Oh, wow!!! That side-striped jackal certainly is a jewel among the sightings. Well done - definitely rare
I find it quite cute when ellies lay down for a nap, but when you see it for the first time it looks rather frightening and sad because you think that the poor animals is too weak to stand up. Luckily, most often it is really just a kip they take.
And the leopard, well..., what is there to say? A leopard is a leopard

God put me on earth to accomplish a certain amount of things. Right now I'm so far behind that I'll never die.

Re: Aat&Elly 2016: 03- Special, Weird and Rare
I'm sure you are making that leopard 4 years in a row up, aat! Wasn't it in the papers somewhere? They won't believe it if we send it on again!
I agree seeing adult elephant lying down is a new thing over the last 3 years or so...maybe put it up under unusual behaviour, and we can get experts?
The SSJ is very rare, and almost impossible to photograph? I think that one is sick?

I am totally about tha leopard sighting, Aat,
you simply have so much luck even with that particular one
To see a side striped jackal in Kruger is in fact rare - Great shots
we do often saw already sleeping elephants especially the little ones of them do a quick sleep whilst the others gathered together under a tree
