29 December: The day the Kgalagadi lost the plot (well not really, let’s not be greedy!!)
Debbie woke me with a cup of coffee and a happy birthday kiss for the old man.
Once out of the tent, we saw hyena tracks all around our camp site. We had probably been investigated pretty well by the resident pack, and our braai grid was certainly looking a lot cleaner that what it had been the previous evening
My first sunrise as a 60 year old, I think was pretty awesome
We decided to take advantage of smooth road south and after checking out the Polentswa waterhole, we set off south.
As seems to be a given this year, a brown hyena was again at Kousant.
I’m not sure if we kept seeing the same animals, but hey, we have seen so few brown hyenas in the past, we were certainly not complaining.
Carrying on down south, frustratingly, there were lion tracks in the road heading north back to where we had come from, but they obviously had eluded us
We got to Bedinkt and were rewarded by a sighting of 2 hyenas at the waterhole as well as meeting up with friends from Cape Town, Richard and Dianna.
They confirmed that the road up from Nossob was also very quiet.
We decided to head back to Polentswa, as we had a bit of housekeeping and packing to attend to.
The trip back was pleasant, on the newly graded road, and we spotted a couple of agamas on the way back:
This chap
As well as this more colourful guy
My birthday was spent chilling back at camp, pottering. Pottering is one of the things I enjoy most, and especially in our camp site in the Kgalagadi
So I was a happy chappie.
That evening, for sundowners at the waterhole, we were joined by these wildebeest
All under a vulture Tree
Just before we had to head back to camp, another brownie arrived for a drink
Our visit to Polentswa this year, certainly had been dominated by hyena sightings
A bit later that evening, supper was served
