I thought this was a queen ant of some sort, but then came across this species of fly that is described as "…small, easily recognized by their ant-like appearance, constricted waist of abdomen, and almost spherical head…"

There are some look alikes in the genus Thyreus brachyaspis and Thyreus calceatus do also occur in the area
