In March 2012, 200 vultures were poisoned in the Kwando region.

Image

In July 2012, 191 vultures poisoned in Gonarezhou Transfrontioer Park in Zimbabwe.

Image

In May 2013, 600 vultures were poisoned in the Kwando region.

Image

In May 2013, 78 vultures were poisoned in Gonarezhou Transfrontier Park in Mozambique

Image

In July 2013, 500 Vultures poisoned in Bwabata National Park, Namibia.

Image

In October 2013 476 vultures were poisoned in North Luangwa National Park, Zambia.

Image

In November 2013, 37 vultures were poisoned in Imfolozi Game Reserve, South Africa and 6 more poisoned in Mfume, South Luangwa, Zambia.

Image

November 2013, 200 more poisoned in the Caprivi Strip.

Image

May 2014, 100 more poisoned on a Buffalo carcass in Botswana.

Image

Early 2016, at least 160 vultures poisoned near Palpye, Botswana and just last month, 120 more were poisoned close to Maun.

Image

Some of these poisonings were on carcasses laced with the intent to kill lions by farmers, but the majority are closely linked to elephant poaching.

I had no data on 2015 to include, but a more detailed search would undoubtedly throw other incidents into the mix above.

It would be a real disaster for the ecosystem if the vultures should disappear.

WHY VULTURES MATTER – AND WHAT WE LOSE IF THEY’RE GONE
