Here is a bushveld slender version drinking:
So Kelly at the end of the day I think it is a slender mongoose, for the simple reason that its tail is slightly curled up!
One can look at a zillion pics here and that never seems to be the case:

There are only two species of mongoose in Tembe, the slender mongoose and banded mongoose.
The large grey mongoose is a species of riverine habitat, wetland, coastal areas understorey vegetation and does not occur in a sand forest, not even in the swamp area there.
And it looks very different.

The range extends into TE and they do have swamp areas there so I wondered. Also thought he looked quite robust in the pic but didn't see him live.

This bull is known by the name Zakhe, an almost daily visitor to the pan
And a favourite for the bull with the most tattered ears
