I have seen buffaloes with this type of colour variation in Kruger as well. We used to call them "tarentaal" buffels. This colour morph is probably due to incomplete migration of embryonic melanocytes (melanin producing cells) during embryonal development.
Unlike the leucism and albinism, I don't think that these colour morphs are deleterious to the survival of the individual.
I don't think that this colour variation is is highly heritable because this animal also has normally pigmented skin / fur. It appears to be due to some embryonic maldistribution of the melanocytes.
It will be in tomorrow's SanParks Times..thanks to Lowvelder for getting the info!
So BC will be famous! -O

We saw this porcupine on the H11 on 14 August 2013.
He had a bad cut on his right cheek and didn't look at all happy.
