Water monitor has much "straighter" tracks, with less sideways movement! :-?

Interesting!? Do you have a source on this, RP?

I am just guessing now. Can the difference be in the markings from the tails. The tails differ a lot with the water monitors tail similar to a crocs shape and rock monitor more like a lizards with a much thinner and round tail.

How the marking will look I don't know, but most likely deeper markings by the water monitor. Maybe thats what keeps the water monitor going straight. \O -O -O -O

Monitors have five toes on the fore- and hind feet, and each toe has a strong, sharp claw. In mud, the scales underneath the toes show clearly in the spoor. The tail also leaves a clear drag mark in the trail. (BJ \O \O ). The spoor of the rock monitor and water monitor may be distinguished by the differences in their habits (Toko and Sprocks \O \O ) requirements and feeding preferences. Although the difference, if any, in the shapes of their footprints has not been recorded, it is probable that the difference in their body built may be evident in their spoor. The water monitor is comparatively slender in built, while the rock monitor is smaller but more compactly built. The toes of the water monitor may therefore be more slender than those of the rock monitor.

The spoor of these two animals are very similar. One way to distinguish their spoor is by their gait and trot. Tell me more.

BTW, I dig BJ's avvie. \O \O \O
