They definitely are! Apart from young or really old ones I've never seen a lion in the Kgalagadi that doesn't sport a proper manepooky wrote:Aren't those the manes of young young lions Richprins

I really don't get some people. Especially when travelling outside school holidays I'd expect the real KTP lovers who will respect the animals. Not so much, it seemspooky wrote:One of our other party saw a cheetah with 4 cubs further north and we wondered how this one had got so far away
I felt very sorry for her having to leave the kill for a good part of the day, but at least she came back for it. There were plenty
of people watching along the fence and they wouldn't move in spite of the rangers asking them.
Or maybe they were just over excited to be so close to the wild animal... But then again - they were asked to leave the mum and her cubs alone
Depending on what the distance and the date were to / of the other sighting of a mum with four cubs, it was probably Gina.
Yet, both of the mothers and their cubs cover quite some distance within a relatively short time - even when the cubs were still really small (like 3 or 4 months old).
Caster made it from Gharagab to Geinab with two weeks, for example when the little ones were exactly that - little ones.

9th Sept.
Our last full day at Nossab. We went out to Cubtjie Quap where an old wildebees carcass had attracted a family
of hyena. They were very inquisitive and were all around the cars too,
Even a jackal got in on the act.
This youngest didn't look as if he was enjoying the old carcass.
Then he came towards us to see what this was all about. He still had all his cub fluff.
Mum also came to check us out.
The sand grouse came in again to fetch water.
A lanner falcon gave chase and managed to catch one sand grouse. But he wasn't paying attention and the grouse got
away. Lucky bird - it wasn't his day.
A springbok came to see what was going on.
and a little striped mouse was running around in the sand.
The trees were full of little birds.
A marico flycatcher
and a female weaver.
Later in the day we found this pale chanting goshawk with his lunch.
and finally another glorious sunset.
We had filled up with fuel and also the water tanks were full.
While we were in the shop the one day we met two couples buying bottles and bottles of water. In fact they cleaned the
shop out of 5l bottles of water. We ask them where they were going. They were staying at Polentswa and didn't know
there was no water there. Not sure how well they did their homework . They were going further into Botswana and were
hoping there would be water at the other camps We told them about the cobra which they weren't too happy about.
The last GO magazine had their story in it, and they were lucky enough not to have seen the snake.

Interesting the hyenas coming to check you out, Pooky!
Nice that lanner falcon...thought they were meant to nest on cliffs or something?

The young and fluffy hyena is still very cute But, ja, the older one looks a bit... mean
I don't think I've ever seen a weaver so far up north. But then again, I haven't seen many weavers in the KTP anyway.
The goshawk with the kill is fantastic too

Lovely end to the day.
Thank you Flutts. That was the best sighting of hyena in KTP that we have ever had.

The hyena came really close to the car - it was amazing.Richprins wrote:Interesting the hyenas coming to check you out, Pooky!

No cliffs on this side of the park but on the Auob river side there are small cliffs in place of the dunes. Maybe they nest there
