Ja, BJ!

The sort of good news, but not really, is that the lodges/bed&breakfasts adjoining Kruger are watching these developments with glee! They are far more experienced at that sort of accommodation, and many much cheaper! So, in the long term, should Kruger outsource their accommodation to new peripheral hotels and cancel the money-spinning existing self-drive institution, they will basically also have to block day visitors too...leaving an empty Kruger except for a few SanParks safari vehicles... :O^

From the Sanparks forum:

gmlsmit wrote:It appears that either the questions asked in Parliament were not understood or someone has misinformed the Minister:

Here below is the latest response from the DEA:

I have questions regarding the proposed bufferzone for Kruger. Is the bufferzone going to be inside or outside of the park?

In terms of the “Strategy on buffer zones for national parks” (Notice 106 of 2012 Government Gazette No 35020 of 8 February 2012) published by the Minister, the buffer zone is outside of the park.

According to the goverment gazette it is going to be outside the park. According to the minister it is going to be inside the park.

A buffer zone may be established around a national park when considered necessary for the proper conservation and effective protection of the national park in achieving its objectives. The buffer zone is an area surrounding a national park which has complementary legal and management restrictions placed on its use and development, aimed at providing an extra layer of protection to the integrity of the national park.

If it is going to be inside the Park, how big is it going to be?

Not Applicable

If it is going to be outside the park:
1. Are people going to be moved?
No

2. Has Mozambique approved to put aside a piece of land bordering Kruger on the Western side?

Mozambique is on the eastern side of Kruger National Park. In terms of treaty on the establishment ,development and management of Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, Article 3, the Government of Mozambique committed to include among others Massingir Communal areas and interlinking regions as part of the expansion of the transfrontier conservation initiative. Therefore the area you are referring to on Mozambican side is part of the development of a Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area.

CHIEF DIRECTOR: COMMUNICATIONS
DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL AFFAIRS

Now please understand very clearly the questions asked were about the PDZ concept not about the buffer zone, that has always been understood and in line with the * February 2012 Government Gazette.

Who is still saying that the RSA Cabinet members have an easy job. :D

From that extract, the questions asked were not about the PDZ, and SanParks answers are correct!

We are still not sure about what the minister said lately!

This whole thing is a comedy of errors. There are 2 re-zoning issues.
1) the buffer zone outside the park to try and put a stop to poaching
2) the 2 kilometer strip inside the park for commercial use.

Effectively what will happen is the buffer zone outside the park will restrict any additional commercial acitivity, thereby guaranteeing no oposition or competition to SanParks' proposed hotels and the 2 kilometer strip will allow SP to do whatever they want from a commercial point of view, hey we may even see factories in this strip. =O: :-? Rediculous of course, but I wouldn't put anything past the current management team if there's money in it.

What scares the heck out of me is the minister's comment that construction of the Malelane hotel will commence in January. This is loose and irrisponsible talk, especially in light of the fact that the EIA has not been concluded. I have to ask, does this mean that no matter what the EIA comes up with, she has already deicded in her own mind that the hotels will go ahead.
