Media Release: Foreign tourists involved in an accident in the KNP

Date: 15th April 2013

An elephant overturned a vehicle driven by two tourists of Chinese origin i.e. male and female, on the H1-7 tar road between Shingwedzi and Punda Maria in the Kruger National Park (KNP) around 06:30 this morning. The driver (male) sustained injuries and a helicopter, local doctor and paramedics rushed to the scene of the accident to attend to him immediately.

“It is not yet clear why the elephant turned aggressive, however we would like to appeal to the public to always be on the look-out for these huge animals and try not to get too close whenever they see one approaching on the road; said the KNP’s Head of Communications and Marketing, William Mabasa.

The tourists slept over at Punda Maria Camp last night and were scheduled to sleep-over at Mopani Camp today.

The injured driver was taken to Clinix Phalaborwa Private Hospital for further assistance.

Management is busy verifying the tourists' details on the system in order to contact the Tourism Safety Initiative (TSI), Embassy etc; to further assist with all the other logistics pertaining to accidents in a foreign country.

Not good to hear, as this only gives SANParks more ammo to curb self drives in the park. The only reason why this happened, was that they were too close to the Elephant and could not get away. All the more reason for us uneducated guests to be under the control of SANParks guides. O/

Not to worry about that,
remember the Sanparks vehicle and trailer that got overturned by an elephant near Tshokwane, a few years back, where one of the guides hot footed out of the situation =O: =O: =O: =O: =O:
leaving guests behind =O: =O: =O: =O: =O:

Also the leopard that jumped into an OSV and bit the private 'land rover jockey' guide on the calf...saw the photos of the wounds =O: =O: =O: =O:

Not so funny was the student taking the Berg n Dal night drive ,who was killed by a leopard on the Matsulu bridge, years ago. :-(

I could go on and on, even trained people get themselves and guests into danger.

Ouch... Hope he will recover. The lady seems to be okay as there is no further mention of her?

Sprocky, not a scenario I want to become reality.
