Re: Essential Camping Equipment
With the king of fire lighters that you can buy these days it seems superfluous to me

Re: Essential Camping Equipment
Basically , it is a somewhat modernised new-style brazier which was , and still is used very extensively in African homes for heating purposes , especially in informal settlements .
You take a 5 gallon ( 20/25 liter ) metal drum , use an axe , or pick-axe to knock a lot of holes in it . Start a fire in it from wood , then fill it up to the rim with coal . The coal burns until it is just rod-hot embers , and as such give off a lot of heat , especially INSIDE the shack/house.
Unfortunately , quite often the shack/house-dweller just keeps it inside the house and quite often they are then overcome by carbon monoxide fumes ........and die
.
It also happens often that the braziers fall over , and cause the house/shack to catch fire and burn down .
This contraption may seem quite " cool " , but should be used with great care , and certainly not within confined areas
.
My suggestion --- just get rid of it

Re: Essential Camping Equipment
Yes it does, but as far as I know you still have to use firelighters so all it does it get the coals ready faster, but who's in a rush when you have a braai?

Re: Essential Camping Equipment
It's a culture thing.
In SA a braai is an art, an event
Here, it is about cooking food as quick as you can
As a generalisation
Re: Essential Camping Equipment
No no no Dzombo

An event , is something that happens now and then , is something special , that you dress up for , sometimes even in a suit ........ something like that ...
In other words , sommer some kind of happening , like a wedding , or such ......

But , braai in South Africa is a way of life

In summer , is when we get serious about it

Enough is enough
