Baobabs store water in their trunks; the trunk is like a vast sponge and up to 75% of the trunk can be used just for water storage in individual cells. This ensures that there is enough water during the dry season to keep the tree alive and to be used to produce new leaves at the beginning of the wet season. As the dry season progresses, baobab trunks can shrink slightly in circumference. The water also helps to keep the tree upright.
The ‘Sagole Tree’ in Limpopo is approximately 1200 years old, 22 meters high and has a circumference of 33 meters. This tree is the biggest baobab in the world by its volume and is the largest flowering plant and the largest succulent in the world.
