Is that a rhino ghost I see
Flittering from tree to tree
Did these creatures walk the earth
Or are they just another myth
Perhaps it is a unicorn
Or another creature with a horn
Is this our future legacy?
Phantoms flittering from tree to tree
When our children say one day
Long ago and far away
Lived a creature with a horn
Was it a rhino or a unicorn?
What a pleasure if we could say
The rhino is still alive today!

(apologies Dewi - but I will blame this on your pic :-) )

A letter from a rhino:

Dear Mr Poacher

I would like to speak to you, as a fellow member of creation.

Your kind and my kind have been living together here for a long time. Remember the good old days when your and my ancestors used to chase each other around the bush? It was a fair fight then..sometimes your ancestors won, sometimes mine...good times....good times...

But things have changed now. You are sick...and hungry, not just for food, but for money...

Remember when both of us were born? We had a mother who looked after us! It was wonderful, not a care in the world...Our mothers gave us everything, food, education, protection...all they wanted for us was to lead a good life and carry on our line, and they would die for that. You know that and I know that, Mr Poacher.

Over the years we both learned to survive in the bush, and our families helped a lot! Ah...family! Africa is all about family, isn't it? Families look after each other...maybe your family didn't? If that is so I am sorry. Maybe you have lost your mother? Maybe you are alone? Maybe you want to help your mother with money? Maybe you have forgotten your mother and what she taught us, Mr Poacher?

My mother taught me to take what I need only, and to think of the future. Not to invade others' territory unnecessarily, and not to fight unless in self defence or to protect what's yours. She taught me that I need to earn the right to respect in a fair fight, which would would make me a man...killing a blind competitor does not make you a man...Well, that's what my mother said.

(I'm a male rhino, Mr Poacher, as you can read.)

Mr Poacher, I think you have children, and a wife who is their mother. I think their mother teaches your children the same things. Do you think your children like what you are doing? Do you think your mother and your wife like what you are doing? Do you think that if you give your children and wife money from our horns they will remember you as a good father and husband? Maybe yes...

But once I am gone....and you are dead, and the money is gone and the food is gone and they can't remember me....they may change their minds?

Mr Poacher, you killed my mother...how would you feel?

Too the author,.. mr. Rhino come to me and
rest your weary head. There is plenty space on
a rather empty shoulder,...
