I have seen many in Southern Namibia ( or similar ) but they tend to be covered with armoured crickets ..which are not my favourite ..0..

E. gregaria occurs from about Helmeringhausen southwards to the Orange River where it is widespread. North of the Tropic of Capricorn you get the look-alike but not gregarious Euphorbia damarana on the gravel plains of the central Namib.

The Armoured crickets feed on everything, perhaps they can sequester the toxic Euphorbia plant matter to make the haemolyph toxic which they use in defense when attacked. Autohaemorrhaging, or reflex bleeding, is the action of animals deliberately squirting haemolyph toward a predator. The "blood" usually contains toxic compounds, making the behaviour an effective chemical defence mechanism.
