Day 5, 25 April 2017, Lower Sabie
One thing I haven't mentioned so far is Mommo's sleeping habits! He usually wakes up during the night needing the loo, goes back to bed, and then gets up at about 5am. However, in Kruger, when he woke up to go to the loo, he wouldn't go back to bed, but instead would go and shower and then wait for us to get up. Most mornings he would be up from about 3.30/4am. On this particular morning, he woke up at 2.30am to go to the loo, showered at about 3.30am and then had rather a long wait for us to get up! When I asked him why he didn't go back to bed at such an ungodly hour he said he had too much to do...he had to shower AND shave! As it turned out, he still wasn't ready to leave when the Brat and I got in the car at 5.50am...I told him he'd better get up at 1.30am the following morning!!
Anywaaay! We had decided to head down to Croc Bridge on the S28 and back up on the H4-2. We had heard lions most of the night and a male had been seen most mornings around the low-level bridge so we went to check that out first. We didn't find him but we did see a jackal and a hyena just on the other side of the bridge. We turned around and got back onto the H4-2. As we approached the turn-off to the S28 we saw something in the road...more wild dogs heading towards us! There were two of them...a very pregnant female and a male. Once again the Brat made a quick u-turn so we could follow them.
Mommo then made a snide comment that because the Brat had seen his wild dogs for the day we could go back to bed!! You see...it's not only the Brown clan that have fun and games in the car!!
Obeying the speed limit.
These two didn't hang around long and soon disappeared into the long grass.
We got onto the S28, then the Brat turned onto the S107 - the road that takes you to a closed waterhole. Not too far down I saw some movement in the grass and then a head popped up!
After a while more heads popped up, until we had counted 8 lions.
You can see how long the grass was, so it wasn't easy to get good pics.
There were some zebra and wildebeest nearby and we could see that the lions were quite alert, and a couple of them moved off to get behind the zebra. Things were getting quite exciting now, at which point the Brat pointed at Mommo in the front seat who was fast asleep! A young male then made a run at the zebra, but he had moved too soon and the zebra all disappeared!

Mommo is an early bird on a “summer clock”, but lacks speed
Wild dogs and some chirping in the car , I bet it’s more peaceful though. I have been watching the movements of those 2 dogs for a few months now as I found it strange for only 2 dogs to be moving together. They seem to hang out from the H4-2/S28 northern intersection all the way down to the H4-2/S130 southern intersection and they are also often seen on the S28 which isn’t a traditional “dog spot”. They must have broken away from the S25 or H5 packs

He should do it at night like everyone else!Lisbeth wrote:Mommo has to sleep sometime

We were quite surprised to see the dogs there, but a nice surprise. Obviously hunting lions are just too much excitement!Bushcraft wrote:Mommo is an early bird on a “summer clock”, but lacks speed

We saw also during our this year's stay lions on that road obviously this might be the same one we saw - Great to know that they are still hanging out there

Mommo.... One goes to Kruger to sleep as much as possible, in peace!
That bitch has seen better days!
Maybe they are survivors of that pack killed by distemper?

Re: The Flutterlings of Africa
Mommo sleeps even less in Kruger than he normally does! We saw a pregnant female and a male a couple of years ago near the high level bridge, wonder if they are the same ones.Richprins wrote:Mommo.... One goes to Kruger to sleep as much as possible, in peace!
