Hello,

I saw this bird last week in the Kgalagadi, in the Nossob riverbed from Nossob camp. The bird was rather far away and the photos are highly cropped. Sorry for the poor quality.
It is obviously a melanistic form of a Goshawk, but could anyone confirm whether it is a Gabar or an Ovambo ?

I would say Gabar Goshawk...I have seen numerous of them in the park. :)

I'm also for the melanistic gabar.

Ovambo also shouldn't occur in KTP (although, that wouldn't be a real indicator in my book anymore
after all the strange bird that were seen in the KTP even though they were not supposed to be there).

Mel, in the Kgalagadi Official Guide, that can be bought in the shops of the park, the Ovambo is said to be present in the KTP (even without the # sign indicating rare occurencies)...

I have never ever seen an Ovambo in the KTp..in more than 30 visits. I'm going to look harder in February ...:) :)

Hello all, I was wondering if this bird was also a melanistic Gabar Goshawk (as in the first post of this thread),but it has a more orange/red bill. It is the same individual on tha 2 pictures, seen in Etosha. Thanks for your help.
