This road is simply a connecting road between Phalaborwa and Letaba, but can provide some good sightings of the big 5 plus all the rare antelope occasionally found in the North of Kruger, as well as wild dog.

Until about 1965 the entrance to the North was at Malopene Gate north of Phalaborwa. Once Phala Gate was completed a dirt road led to Letaba, and it was decided to tar the road in 1975/6, paid for by the National Department of Highways but done by Kruger technical services.

Interestingly the waterpoints along the road mostly already existed, including Nhlanganini Dam, a concrete structure built by a team under the leadership of a Mr Stefanson. This dam supplemented the earthern Winkelhaak Dam slightly upstream.

Most of the windmills are currently defunct except for Masorini.

Sable Dam was built at the same time the road was tarred, to provide water for construction and to augment water requirements for game in the area as per Parks Board policy. (There were indeed many sable antelope about.)

Around 1976 Masorini picnic spot was constructed and the archeological site developed by a university team under Prof Eloff.
