That's a long time ago. I do not think that it happens very often anymore. What the "close up" is concerned the lenses are different these days.

I also think a lot of the big mammals are now very comfortable being close to vehicles.
Have often had to actually had to back off a little bit to get a decent photo of something crossing the road.
