Dr Joubert Passes Away

Post by Richprins »

Kruger Magazine
5h

We have learned with deep sadness of the passing of one of our KRUGER MAGAZINE expert contributors and an internationally celebrated conservationist and author, Salomon Joubert (Dr SCJ Joubert).
SCJ started his conservation career in 1964 as a postgraduate student in the Sabi Sand Wildtuin and was appointed to the Kruger National Park as Junior Ranger at the end of 1964, stationed at the remote Klipkoppies Section on the Mozambique border (due east of Letaba). In 1967, he was granted study leave to do a BSc (Hon) (Wildlife Management) degree at Pretoria University.
In November 1967, he was transferred to the Research Section with responsibility for rare antelope, in particular roan. For his work on the social behaviour of roan, he was awarded an MSc and subsequently a DSc degree on the population ecology of roan.
In 1976, he was promoted to Head of Research and was intimately involved in monitoring large
mammal populations, a study that yielded all the essentials of what later developed into a Geographical Information System.
SCJ served as Park Warden (Director) of the KNP from 1987 to 1994.
In 2017, the editorial team of KRUGER MAGAZINE approached SCJ to write expert contributions on the antelope of KNP. In total, 16 species formed part of the series.
Earlier this year, a new series by SCJ on rivers of KNP was introduced. A total of three articles have been published to date. A further five articles have recently been submitted by SCJ and we are privileged to be able to publish these further five articles in future issues of KRUGER MAGAZINE.
Our sincere condolences to the family and friends of SCJ - he will be remembered for his outstanding conservation and literary work.

Dr Joubert was a friend of ours and his contributions appear at various places on the forums.

He was a friend of mine, a genius, and a true fighter for what he believed was right until the end.

I shall miss him terribly, and RIP to a Kruger legend.

How old was he?

I hope that he will find many antelopes wherever he has gone to.
