WHY ARE PILANESBERG MALE LIONS NUMBERED

Please could anyone give more information on why this male lion has the number 5 on his rump?
Are all the male lions numbered?

Are you sure that's not a scar that looks like a 5?

Perhaps the female rated him to keep the others away?
Did you see any other lion with similar marking? - I honestly can't imagine anyone getting close enough to 'brand' him. I'll go with scar too.

The Lions are branded (by the Pilanesberg Wildlife Trust) and have numbers

Toko - thank you and the article was an interesting read. I can't get enough info on the animals of the bush.
