PJL, are all of your aardwolf sightings from Mountain Zebra NP from winter and in the late afternoon? (and maybe with night temperatures below 10°)

Yes that’s correct. We see them from about 4:30pm onwards - we call it aardwolf-o-clock.
We have seen one in summer as well but winter is the best time for sightings of them

Aardwolves feed almost exclusively on the termite
Trinervitermes trinervoides during the warmer months of the year, whereas on cold winter nights these insects remain belowground, unavailable to aardwolves. In July and August aardwolves shift their foraging efforts to a less abundant and less nutritious termite species,
Hodotermes mossambicus. This species is diurnal and that's why you may see aardwolves in the afternoons when it's too cold for the nocturnal snouted harvester termites to come out.

So that's why the aardwolf became diurnal all of a sudden
