Media Release: SANParks revises its filming and photography rates in National Parks

Date: 7th February 2013

The South African National Parks (SANParks) today announced in a statement, its revised filming and photography rates for 2013. According to SANParks, General Manager: Media, Events & Stakeholder Relations, Reynold Thakhuli, the filming and photography rates have not been reviewed in the last ten years. "The increase will see an average of 10 percent across the board for all filming and photographic needs taking place in national parks."

He said while recognizing the filming and photographic industries role in the promotion of our natural resource and heritage, it is also important to maintain area integrity of our national parks and this can only be attained by good maintenance which requires financial input as profit is not a primary motive. “It is also important to note that, SANParks in initiating the revised rates, kept the filming and photographic industry in mind, so as not to put the industry under financial strain amid the global economic meltdown. Hence only a ten percent increase was adopted.”

Thakhuli said, the increases are not even close to what the international conservancies are charging at the moment. There are several filming and photography categories that will be affected differently in terms of small and large groupings as well as their needs and period spent in a particular national park.

The increases are being implemented with immediate effect in all the 19 National Parks that are managed by SANParks. "It is for this reason that we invite the industry to familiarize themselves with the new tariffs which are posted on our website," concluded Thakhuli.

Strange that as per the linked proposed tariffs the old rate was applicable in 2008 the current rate was substantially higher than the 2008 rate and the new rate (which represents the first review in 10 years) has a minimum increase of 10% with some items increasing with a lot more than the stated average of 10%. Based on the quote above it seems that the last increase took place without being reviewed and there seems to be a lack of understanding of the concept of "an average of 10 percent across the board". 0*\

I pay my Taxes, I pay my Municipal rates, I pay for my Accommodation in Kruger, I pay for my SELF driven vehicle (Petrol /maintenance and replacement), I pay for my Wild card, I pay for my camera equipment, I pay to go on photography courses to improve my skills...all this to go to MY Kruger to see my animals and sometimes to take pics of them. It has got nothing to do with anyone if I delete some /all of them, Place some on the web, Email Aunt Mary a couple from my Holiday or sell a few on demand where in each case Kruger gets FREE advertising...Go take a big jump in Sunset Dam

Wonder what the new rates are, and whether it applies to casual tourists? -O-
