Trans Kalahari Highway - travel to Namibia?

Hi guys - some advice from those who've travelled this road through Botswana to Namibia before...
We are planning a family trip to Etosha returning through our beloved Kgalagadi. Now obviously we want to get to Etosha in as short a time as possible.
We'll be leaving from Secunda on a Friday at noon. My aim is to travel as follows to Etosha:
1. FRIDAY: Secunda to Zeerust - 400km, sleep over
2. SATURDAY: Leave very early - e.g. 3am or 4am - cross the border into Bots and take the Kalahari highway.
Can you drive this whole stretch in a day and get to Windhoek or at least Gobabis? 926km to Gobabis, 1150km to Windhoek. I normally drive Secunda to Twee Rivieren in one stretch and that's 1200km, but I know there are normally lots of donkeys and cattle on the roads in Botswana...?
If not - where do you suggest we overnight - bearing in mind it will be myself, the missus and 2 small kiddos.
3. SUNDAY: Gobabis/Windhoek to Okaukuejo (Etosha).
Any thoughts? Am I a madman? -O
