THE field ranger who escaped death last week when he was trampled by a one-ton buffalo at the Addo Elephant National Park, has been discharged from hospital and is recovering at home.

Sandile Gunya, 40, who lives at the park with his girlfriend and their two-year-old daughter, said while he was still in a lot of pain he was well on the way to recovery.

"The doctors told me to walk as much as I can. It is difficult with my knee but I am trying. The more I walk, the faster I believe I will get better," Gunya said.
He was injured last Tuesday after he was caught off guard by a Cape buffalo which had crashed through the gate of a locked pen.

The incident occurred near the main camp where the rangers were herding buffaloes for auction, and the animal escaped.
