I reckon it was a Cardinal Woodpecker ..Crested and Black Collared Barbets are relatively quiet diggers

The local African Grey parrot in our complex went on holiday and came back with new sounds, including guinea fowl and the alarm call of monkeys! So it sounds like waking up in the bush here!
