Flavour of the Month September 2013: S100

You may all duck and run away at the mention of the S100, but there are only 6 roads in the park where we have found what is commonly known as the magnificent 7 and this is one of them. I also did the busiest tar road in the park, the H4-1, so I thought that I would also do what is probably the busiest dirt road. =O:

Many have a love-hate relationship with the S100 as it can fire one day and be very quiet the next, but just like all roads it’s about timing. We have seen nothing on it, turned at the end and then seen plenty on the way back, so in that sense it’s very like the H4-1.

There always seems to be some sort of lion fever happening on the S100 and I assume that’s given it the reputation as the “lion road” in KNP, but in that sense I do find it overrated to a degree. It does however have a wide variety of general game, so it’s never a totally dull drive.

It runs along the N’wanetsi River for most of its 19.4km, but unfortunately there are many areas where the road diverts a little far from the river, however there are many inlets and “viewpoints” that are always worth checking out.

We find it better at first light, primarily as I hate the traffic later in the day and in the evenings it can feel like you are doing the Dakar rally with all the dust, so we generally stay away.

I have hundreds of pics taken on this road over the years and it’s too much of a mission to go through them all, so will post a couple that I randomly fish out.

The good old S100! 0*\ In the 70s and 80s this road always produced lions for us but on our last few trips it has been very hit and miss!! :O^ We have never been lucky enough to see leopard, cheetah or wild dog there!!

I don’t want this to turn into “Pics taken by BC on the S100” but I have fished out a few more and have plenty more to keep things going =O: =O: =O: =O:
