Afsaal is 22km/1hr north of Malelane Gate on the H3; 40km/2hr south of Skukuza on the H3, and 36km/2hr from Pretoriuskop along the H2-2 to where it meets the H3. Near the intersection of H3 and H2-2 on road from Skukuza to Malelane.

Afsaal is a super stop-over from Malelane to Skukuza - Croc Bridge to Pretoriuskop - a round about drive of the south via S114-H3 \O

There is normally a busyness with tourists coming or going. ;-)

Past the shop is the picnic area, and it lends itself to some relaxing... :-)

If you are lucky (and if you promise not to use a flash) you might get to see the resident Scops Owlet. [O] (0)

Afsaal was the last big Picnic spot built in Kruger, along with Nkhuhlu. It is not very scenic...just a central place where the Tar road (H3) links to the Voortrekker Road (H2-2), in response to tourist pressure, which makes sense!

It started small, like most picnic spots, with gas braais, ablutions etc. then got a bigger and bigger shop, then draught beer and take-aways, depending on the new franchise operator/s. Now a smaller shop, no booze.. ^0^

Animals are habituated to this unfenced spot, with some scares over the years! :-0

I remember the story about the leopard walking up to a braai and walking off with a steak  O-/

Where are the wild dogs?

\O \O \O

The site is along a stream, which has become steadier over the last decade, with our extended wet cycle.

So herbivores often seen there in the winter too, making their way up and down the stream bed, bypassing the spot, crossing the tar road etc.!

Afsaal's original little tourist attraction (before the owl) is a massive termite heap, with a very interesting explanation about it and its tree! \O

There was also a great pic of a hyena sheltering under the ablution walkway taken during the first flood rains in 2001, was it?
