Not sure if this is the right place for my question.
Good evening all. My son in the UK has just advised us that his wife is now pregnant. This will be out 5th grand child. Yeeeeeeehaaaaaa.
I have already booked them in with us at Skukuza from 28.04 to 03.05 to join us for the meet.
Now, can a pregnant lady of about 5 months take malaria tablets?
If not, what are her options please?
Any information will be appreciated.

Wow that's exciting news STF!
I have no idea whether you can take anti malarials when pregnant but I'm sure the pharmacy places like Dischem would know the options

Well, congrats on your DIL's pregnancy for your 5th grandchild. 
I think, you son's wife should see a doctor. Not sure that advice from us would be any good, unless we got a doctor among us.
Malaria tablets can be quite hard on people. I didn't have to take them in ages, going to KTP and Addo for the past trips, but
I remember having taken the tablets one evening without food and I felt sick to the bone afterwards. Others get that even if
they eat. Not sure if your DIL took malaria tablets before and if so, how she responded to them. But even if she coped well,
you never know how her body might react now. That's why I said, she should rather talk to her doc / gynaecologist.

Wow that is good news
In 2009 my wife were 6 months pregnant with our daughter. Our 3 week kruger trip were booked and paid before we found out she was pregnant. We went to her gynaecologist and explained to him that we have booked this trip and it's a malaria area. He prescribed her malaria tablets which are suitable for pregnant woman.

Just a heads up...quite a few cases of malaria happening now in Nelspruit area, not even related Kruger yet, so be vigilant regarding "flu" symptoms up to 3 weeks after a visit. Mosquitos plenty now.

My SIL just told me about a medication that you only take when you get symptoms, so no prophylaxis.
Is there something available in SA? If so, can you advise me on a brand and if it's available without prescription?

It's tough to advise, Mello, all sorts of premeds...the problem is when visitors return home and doctors have no clue about malaria? So that is the advice...check blood asap for malaria!
But ja, there are premeds!
