Description
Very common, tall (1m +) herb. A non-woody plant (forb). Dec - Mar.
Yellow flowers with violet markings near base, only two fertile stamens significantly longer and larger than the others, curving upwards.
The floral bracts divided into three leaflets distinguishes this subsp. from subsp. diandra (bracts undivided or absent).

Distribution
Not endemic to South Africa. Provincial distribution: KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West.

Habitat
Cleome prefers sandy or rocky soil. It is often the most common flower in disturbed ground, and may cover large areas. Also occurring in bushveld.

Description
Slender erect herb, up to 75 cm tall. Leaves palmately compound with 3-9 linear leaflets, 1-4 cm long, glabrous. Flowers in a lax terminal inflorescence, bright golden yellow with purple spots near the base of the petals. Fertile stamens 2, up to 4 cm long. Capsule 5-10 cm long, linear.

Distribution
Namibia, Botswana, South Africa (Free State, Northern Cape, North West).

Habitat
In mopane woodland and other dry woodland.
