Cheleka is on the Nossob side and although we didn't have major sightings there yet,
I quite like the setting of the waterhole as you are able to get away from the road
to watch the animals drinking.

Closest camps:

Nossob - 37 km
Twee Rivieren - 123 km

In December 2009 we were discovering the ABC (Aardwolf, Brown Hyena and Caracal were top of our wishlist) of the KTP. It was going to be our first time in the Wilderness Camps and we were having great sightings day after day. The song, "Days Like This" by Van Morrison became our theme song for this trip as it was such a joyous and memorable trip.

When its not always raining therell be days like this
When theres no one complaining therell be days like this
When everything falls into place like the flick of a switch
Well my mama told me therell be days like this
.........

On 30 December 2009 we were staying at Nossob and headed south first thing in the morning. It was quiet but we had a good sighting of Spotted Eagle owls near Kasper se Draai. Not much else even at Cheleka so we carried on to Dikbaardskolk. On our return trip to Nossob we stopped at Cheleka again, it was already 7.45 AM.

There was a Brownie at the waterhole but the jackals and a Gemsbok were hassling her

so she made off :-(

But she sat down under a tree, waiting patiently

We have seen many Brownies since then but this one still remains the best :-)

That brownie was thirsty!

A very special sighting indeed. O:V

Interesting how the waterhole was re-shaped since:

In December 2009, some of the lions of the KTP were succumbing to the Canine Distemper Virus.

We saw this lioness very close to death at Cheleka
