Olifants is a "must" camp to visit, at least once in a lifetime!

- Incomparable view!!!!

- Good predator sightings, especially southward

- Good general game

- Stunning accomodation on the perimiter

- Sufficient road network

On the down side:

- A bit pricey?

- No campsite

- Few rare antelope

- Limited availability

- Too far North re. accessability

What to look for:

Elephant, hyena

Sycamore Fig

Goliath heron, yellow-billed kite.

As RP says, a must visit camp.

Situated high up on the cliff above the river.

The views are spectacular.

And not too far down the road is Makaringa Lookout.

I love Olifants.

It is my all time fave camp in Kruger. Or any game reserve for that matter.

Nothing nicer than sitting on the stoep of the bungalow in the gathering gloom of an evening, the braai just started, a beer in your hand. The sound of the river and the hippo down below......heaven.

Another view from the same spot.
This one at about mid-day.
And the water was a lot lower

Taken August 2004.

Strangely, this is the camp I have found Wild Dog the nearest to...within sight of the gate!

Also my first Nyala and Sharpe's Grysbok ever very near camp! O\/

And my favourite Kruger sighting ever, watching a horizon-to-horizon thunderstorm develop from the viewing area, front-lit by the setting sun, with continuous lightning, and I mean continuous...all along the storm front! Remarkable!

Richprins,
Are Grysbok found this far south?
I thought they were only in the Punda area?

Dzombo, Sharpe's Grysbok are at the Southern edge of their usual range in Kruger here, apart from along a narrow strip down the border with Moz to the South of the park (Lebombo?). North of here, they are found all over to the Westtern side, but are absent in the open shrub savanna to the east until you get up to the very far North where their range moves East to the border again.

(I think I'd be quicker drawing a map =O: ).

So which regions are best to see them??

I've seen them between Shingwedzi and Red Rocks, The Kanniedood Dam road and around the Punda Maria area. The regulars to Kruger will probably be better able to narrow it down even better than I have for you.
