During our meanderings through Kruger we have seen Roan every now and again. but usually only alone or in small groups of 2 or 3 together.
On 06-09-2016 we visited Shipandani hide with my parents and left again towards the tar road.
Coming up the hill just after we crossed the low water bridge we came across this group of about 25 Roan.
Needless to say I was completely ecstatic.
We followed them for the better part of an hour as they were dodging us through the brown Mopani trees.

12 – Roan Antelope
The northern regions do have some Antelopes you (almost) don’t see in the central or southern regions. We call it the triple A – Antelopes: Eland, Roan and Sable
After stories about Sable and Eland it’s now time for Roan
And yes…we were lucky again to see them several times during our trip
First time was along the Capricorn Loop in the Mopani region
I almost passed him because he was doing a nap near some bush, but he could not escape from my camera

I asked him friendly to get up and promised him to show him on internet … he did and I did...

This was the first sighting with Roan.
4 days later… driving in the northern region we had a great sighting with Roan close to Boyela waterhole.

Always great to see young ones with them. We counted 14 of them

They were on their way to the waterhole , but this was occupied by many elephant bulls so they hesitated and went back to the other side of the road. It was very dry and you can see they were a bit thin.

Another sighting with Roan , this time a family of 7

Suddenly they turned around and moved away.

3 days later… about 10 km north of Babalala, a bit on a distance but this area was much more green.

This was about the triple A – Antelopes, very lucky with seeing them all and so many times Roan, it was a real pleasure and love to share this with you

I saw my first ever roan antelope in this area north of Mavumbye, in the 1980s!
There were a couple of them with a herd of sable!
Then it turned out they had interbred, creating a "roble"...
found it, and my old diary!
30 June 1987 - entry 75: "See a lone Sable bull quite near road on left, Very good sighting. Lots of Zebra further on, interspersed with more sable, some lying down. Suddenly see one looking rather like roan, but dismissed it. Drive a little further, and are amazed to see perfect view of a roan walking towards us with rocking gait! See four more pairs of roan horns lying together in grass on rise, some way away.."
My map lists 8 sable and 5 roan, although the first one I dismissed was probably then the "crossbreed", making 5.5 roan and 7.5 sable!
Even though it was my first Kruger roan, I had studied the animals carefully at the Pta zoo, and slavishly followed photographs.
I'm sure the latter 4 lying down were roan, therefore indicating that it was not just the lone bull in the area!
