Description:
This slender built mongoose has a long tail with a black tip (hence it Afrikaans name: Swartkwasmuishond, translated: black tipped mongoose) When it moves, the tail is characteristically bent in a bow, similar to that of a lion. The subspecies Galerella Sanguinea Ratlamuchi has long reddish-brown hair and a longer dark tip to the tail. The Yellow Mongoose is usually more yellowish with a white-tipped tail. The Koakoland Slender Mongoose is completely black and much larger.
Sexual dimorphism:
Males are slightly larger than the females.
Food:
Beetles, termites, locusts, ants, lizards, fruit, mice and bird eggs.
Habitat:
A typical savannah species. Also occurs in more open areas, provided there is sufficient shelter such as rock, termite heaps and old tree trunks.
Distribution Southern Africa:
South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique
Distribution Africa:
Habits:
Mainly diurnal and appear a while after sunrise. They forage solitarily. Are mainly terrestrial but sometimes climb trees to hunt or evade enemies. When frightened they will usually freeze in their tracks or stand on their hind feet to observe their surroundings. The move with a fast gait and prefer footpaths. Often seen hastily crossing the road.
Voice:
Silent, young “hey-nwee”
Breeding:
2 to 2 young are born from October to March.
Enemies:
Leopard, lion, black-backed jackal and civet.

* Edit: I thought this was a Yellow Mongoose but Super M says it's a Slender Mongoose because of the black tip on the tail...which is a lot less common.
