Here is another mega buffalo from the same herd as the very first photo in this thread. We encountered him at Shavo III in the Mopani area. This BIG bull has a spread of approx 50 inches but his substantial boss indicates him to be at mid life - none of the rough worn features of really old bulls.

Hi RP, I don't think there is significant dirt on the above buff's horns - it really look like the softer outer horn layer of younger buffalo horns.

The below buff illustrate what buffalo horn bosses look like on old buffs that had been bumping heads with the competition for twenty or more years.
[ Note that although this buff is quite old he never grew a wide spread of horns - most Kruger buffs have this genetical feature.]

Sometimes a person finds solitary or small groups of modderbulle that have left the large herds in favor of peace and quiet. Amongst them you will often find a bull with even the hard horn material partially worn away, these guys normally have even their horn tips worn away during their hard lives out in the bush :-

Today I was surfing on Google and on Northern Frontier Safaris’ website I found the below photo of a monster buff from days
long gone-bye.
This buff was hunted in the greater Meru district of Kenya and illustrates a horn formation occasionally encountered from central Tanzania northward. [ Note the forward curled horn tips ]
Our own KNP has produced some similar buffs but they were without the forward curled tips.

Makes the one "big" buff I've seen look like a tiddler in comparison.
