The Monastery of Filerimos

Parking we saw the first “wildlife” O**

Filerimos hill (267 m) overlooking the small town of Ialyssos and the bay of Ixia and Trianda.

The hill took its name from a monk who came from Jerusalem in the 13th century bringing with him an icon of the Blessed Virgin painted by the Apostle Luke. The small church he built became later a basilica and then in the 14th century the Knights of St. John, built a large monastery with its exquisite bell-tower that one still sees today.
This place is also an important archeological site; here once stood the Acropolis of the ancient town of Ialyssos with an important temple dedicated to Athena Polias. You can see the ruins in front of the bell tower.

The Monastery was destroyed by the Turks. In the ’20s, during the Italian occupation, in the effort to consolidate and justify the Italian presence on the island, a major reconstruction was carried out. They even brought a congregation of Capuchin monks but no particular care was taken for the Hellenistic and Byzantine relics.

At the small bar there were many Greeks, who probably had assisted the Sunday service in the small church ( the priest was still around) There was a lovely atmosphere, beautiful vegetation and it was very peaceful with the peacocks giving a bit of colour.

Fascinating again, and thanks for all the research, Saint Lisbeth! O\/ ^Q^ X#X

Like your wine bag! ;-)

You are very pretty...why do women often paint toenails but not fingernails? This has puzzled me before... :-? --00--

Where is your wristwatch? 0()

On the toenails the varnish lasts for a long time, the fingernails is another story. Personally I do not like dark varnish on the fingernails, but on the toenails it must be brilliant and you cannot have two different colours. Does it make sense? lol lol

The wristwatch leaves the sign as you can see, so when I am in the sun, no wristwatch ;-)

Bushy, there are many places in Europe that you would love. We are so full of history and not only in Rome and Florence.

Tell me when you have won the Lotto and I'll make your itinerary ;-)
