Pilanesberg - The Great Album Show *
Good morning all, I am busy putting together all our photos we have taken at Pilanesberg since our first trip there in October 2006. From these I will choose the better ones to place on this thread per visit. The visits were Oct 2006, Jan and Oct 2007, Jan and Oct 2008, Jan and Oct 2009 and August and October 2010. We will do the albums in that order and sincerely hope that you will enjoy paging through them.

Re: Pilanesberg - The Great Album Show
Hi all. Thanks ever so much for the wonderful motivational responses. It has certainly inspired us to get a move on in posting our first album. We first visited Pilanesberg in June 1999. We fell in love with it but the cost of staying at a hut at Manyane or Bakgatla was a trifle too expensive for us they always included a bed and breakfast rate. We only wanted a self catering unit. Then in April 2006 we saw an ad for "exclusive use" accomodation for a period of 7 nights for a very reasonable price and it was on a self catering basis. We bought our week for the first week in October after school holidays which meant that our Friday, Saturday and Sunday would be during school holidays but the from Monday to the Thursday night would be out of school holidays. We also reckoned that the burning seasin would be finished leaving nice clear veld for viewing. Our first "exclusive use" week was therefore to be October 2006. Album to follow.

Ok folks here we go - all aboard. We hope you do not mind us posting so many photos. There are 31 photos for this first album so we will split into two. We will add a narration for those pics where we can remember any details.

BUFFALO ARE A VERY RARE SIGHT. WE SAW THESE AT THE FIRST OF THE TLOU DAMS.
AND THESE AT THE SECOND OF TLOU DAMS.

NOT SURE WHERE.
ON TAU LINK.
THIS Lion ON MANKWE WAY CROSSED THE ROAD RIGHT IN FRONT OF OUR CAR.
AND THEN WENT AND LAY DOWN BEHIND SOME BUSHES.
JOAN AND I AT OUR FAVOURITE PLACE - LENONG VIEW POINT.
MAKORWANE DAM HIDE.
MAKORWANE DAM HIDE.
ON LEAVING MAKORWANE HIDE WE FOUND OUR EXIT BLOCKED. THE ELDERLY LADY IN THE PICTURE WALKED WITH A SEVERE LIMP AND WALKED EVEN CLOSER TO THE ELEPHANTS THAN SHE WAS HERE.
A GROUP PHOTO ON THE SHORES OF MANKWE DAM.
THATS ALL FOR NOW FOLKS. NEXT FIFTEEN NEXT TIME.

OCTOBER 2006 - PART 2 OF 2
RATLHOGO HIDE.
MOLOTO DRIVE.
ON THE BANKS OF MANKWE DAM. NOTE CROCODILE IN THE BACKGROUND.
NOT SURE WHERE THIS WAS.
ON TLOU DRIVE. NOTE THE MAGNIFICENT HORN.
NOT SURE WHERE??????
WE HAVE NEVER SEEN MANKWE DAM THIS LOW - TAKEN FROM THE HIDE.
DURING A SUNSET DRIVE ON KUBU DRIVE NEAR KUBU DAM. P.S. THIS PHOTO WON JOAN SECOND PRIZE IN A COMPETITION IN THE PRETORIA NEWS. SHE WON A FUJI FINE PIX CAMERA. WE COULD NOW DISCARD THE H.P. PHOTOSMART CAMERA.
A BROWN HYAENA ON THE SAME SUNSET DRIVE.
THE BURNT OUT REMAINS OF THE PILANESBERG CENTRE.
WE SAW THIS GUY ON TSHEPE DRIVE JUST BEFORE THE KWATALA DRIVE JUNCTION.
THIS WAS AS CLOSE AS HE WAS TO THE CAR.
HE THEN LAY DOWN WITH HIS FACE TO THE SETTING SUN.
NEARBY WAS THIS WILY FELLOW WATCHING THE LION.
HE THEN GOT UP AND PICKED UP THIS HUGE BONE AND DISAPPEARED INTO THE BUSH WITH IT.
We are almost certain that this male lion is one of the pair that we have seen a number of times in this same area in our later visits.
Anyway folks that is October 2006 album complete.

Re: Pilanesberg - The Great Album Show
JANUARY 2006.
My apologies for going backwards in time but I have just found these few pics.
In January 2006 we had a big family bash for a weekend at Manyane. My son from England and his Italian girlfriend, my son who is still in South Africa and his wife and my daughter and her boyfriend joined us for the weekend. We booked four safari tents which we found to be very comfortable. No airconditioning though, only fans but it rained both nights which cooled things down.
THE WEATHER WAS WET AND MISERABLE FOR MOST OF THE TIME.
GIRAFFE IN THE MIST.
AND THEN THE HIGHLIGHT OF OUR TRIP N THE DITHABANENG ROAD NEAR SALTY SPRINGS ON OUR LAST AFTERNOON DRIVE.
What a blessing it was to see this pack of wild dog who just lay and played around our car. We were with them for about 20 minutes.
Coming soon - January 2007.

Re: Pilanesberg - The Great Album Show
Well, that is 2006 done with. Let us now move on to 2007. Again only two visits this year. In January 2007 we spent a day in Pilanesberg with my son who had come out from England without his Italian girlfriend. That romance was over and he was a bachelor again.
JANUARY 2007.
MANKWE DAM.
I THINK THIS IS ONE OF THE WYDAHS - NOT SURE WHICH ONE.
RATLHOGO HIDE.
MANKWE DAM.
NOT SURE WHERE.
AN AFTERNOON STORM BUILDING UP.
RATLHOGO HIDE.
TROTTING ALONG TSHWENE DRIVE.
SOMEWHERE IN THE PARK????
WE CAME ACROSS A PAIR OF KLIPSPRINGER ON LENONG LOOP.
NEAR MANKWE DAM.
OUR LAST SIGHTING OF THE DAY NEAR BAKUBUNG GATE.
COMING UP NEXT 26 PHOTOS FROM OCTOBER 2007.

OCTOBER 2007 - PART 1 OF 2.
An album of our weeks stay in October 2007.
LERU AND FISA JUST OUTSIDE MANYANE CAMP. THEY HAD JUST BEEN ROLLING IN THE ELEPHANT DUNG.
LERU AND FISA WALKING STRAIGHT TOWARDS OUR CAR.
Please read the fascinating history of these two males (not brothers) on the thread PILANESBERG NEWS NEWSPAPER.
A LIZARD WITH AN UNPRONOUNCABLE NAME.
WE FELT VERY SAFE LOOKING UP AT THIS ELEPHANT ON THE TOP OF LENONG LOOP.
OUR FRIENDLY CRIMSON BREASTED SHRIKE AT THE DOOR OF OUR HUT.
SPOT THE SERVAL. EVERY NOW AND AGAIN HE WOULD JUMP UP IN THE AIR AND TRY AND POUNCE ON SOMETHING. NOT A VERY GOOD PHOTO BUT THE BEST AND WE HAVE.
MALE STEENBOK
SOME FURRY FEMALE WATERBUCK. YOU'VE JUST GOT TO LOVE THOSE HEART SHAPED NOSES.
THIS ELEPHANT DID NOT WORRY ABOUT US.
A VERY YOUNG GIRAFFE.
A SLEEPY LOOKING JACKAL.
Part two to follow.

Re: Pilanesberg - The Great Album Show
OCTOBER 207 - PART 2 OF 2.
SEEN ON TLOU DRIVE.
THESE SPRINGBUCK REMIND US OF THE MINT TOFFEES ONE USED TO GET.
ON LENGAU DAM WALL.
AND SOME MORE ON THE BANKS OF LENGAU DAM. THE ONE HAD SPOTTED SOME ZEBRA BUT NOTHING CAME OF IT.
TARGET PRACTICE ANYONE?????
JOAN AND I AT OUR FAVOURITE PLACE.
OUT FIRST LEOPARD SIGHTING ON THUTLWA LOOP. IT RAN ACROSS THE ROAD IN FRONT OF US AND IT TOOK PRETTY SMART WORK FROM JOAN TO STILL MANAGE TO FIRE OF THIS SHOT BEFORE IT DISAPPEARED.
OUR FIRST ELAND SIGHTING LATE ONE AFTERNOON ON THE POTOKWANE ROAD. THERE WERE ABOUT EIGHT OF THEM BUT THIS WAS THE ONLY ONE JOAN MANAGED TO GET A CLEAR SHOT OF.
That is all for October 2007. We popped in for day during January 2008 but despite seeing a lot of the general game there were no worthwhile photos to put on this album. The next album will be October 2008 with 36 photos split in two parts.

OCTOBER 2008 - PART 2 OF 3.
ON TSHWENE DRIVE A FEW KM'S FROM MANYANE AT MIDDAY THIS MOMMY AND HER CUB CROSSED THE ROAD IN FRONT OF US. LUCKILY SHE TURNED AROUND JUST AS JOAN TOOK THE PHOTO OTHERWISE WE COULD HAVE ENDED UP WITH A "BUM" SHOT.
THIS FELLOW CAN USUALLY BE SEEN AT MANKWE HIDE.
A BROWN SNAKE EAGLE NEAR MANKWE DAM.
A REAL ROADBLOCK ON KGABO DRIVE.
THE FIRST AND ONLY TIME WE HAVE SEEN CHEETAH. THIS WAS ON MANKWE WAY 2 KM'S BEFORE THE FISH EAGLE TURNOFF TO THE RIGHT.
SORRY ABOUT THE BAD QUALITY OF THE PHOTO BUT SHE WAS VERY FAR AWAY AND THE WEATHER WAS NOT GOOD. HERE SHE STARTED TO STALK SOME WILDEBEEST BEFORE DISAPPEARING OVER THE RISE AND WE HAD TO GET BACK TO CAMP.
WATERBUCK AND A YOUNSTER ON THE BANKS OF MANKWE DAM.
THE YOUNGSTER WANTED TO MAKE FRIENDS WITH THE PLOVER BUT TO NO AVAIL.
MARIBU STORKS AT LENGAU DAM.
A TINY ZEBRA ON NKAKANE LINK.
FROM THE VIEWING DECK AT PILANESBERG CENTRE.
To be continued.
