Sanparks is too busy selling bits and pieces of the park to be occupied by something so trivial as cars speeding and animals, supposed to be protected, being killed in the roads. It makes me sick 0= 0=

That law has only been respected for a very short time. At least, that's my impression -O-

I hope that they will follow up on this and tell us what the penalty will be.

Outcry to enforce speed limit in Kruger National Park after cheetah is hit by vehicle

Ike Phaahla, the spokesperson for the KNP, confirmed the park was experiencing problems with visitors speeding.

There has been an outcry by the community to enforce rules around speeding in the Kruger National Park (KNP) after a cheetah was hit and killed by a vehicle on Friday September 24 at about 17:40.

The cheetah was allegedly killed by a motorist travelling from Shingwedzi to Punda Maria Gate. According to Brig Motlafela Mojapelo, spokesperson for the police in Limpopo, the motorist, a 51-year- old woman, was arrested in the KNP on the same day.

“The cheetah allegedly came from the right side and reportedly damaged the right door, fender, head lamp and bumper. She allegedly did not stop at the scene, but drove to the Punda Maria Gate for assistance. Nobody was injured during the accident,” Mojapelo said in a statement.

He said the police in Saselamani registered a case of reckless and/or negligent driving.

SANParks said in a statement that the women will be facing charges related to the National Environmental Management Act for protected areas.

Willem Botha, a former ranger and conservationist involved with anti-poaching efforts, told Lowvelder that he had been on a sunset drive in the park when they discovered the carcass.

“While we were on the drive about 70 vehicles drove past us that were already late to get to the gate. At about 16:00 we saw a cheetah standing in the road calling out. Our guide told us that he was probably calling for his brother. The next moment my wife looked down on the ground and saw the dead cheetah lying there,” Botha said.

He said it was unheard of that so many visitors are late to exit the gates before closing time.

“Law enforcement should be happening inside the park to ensure that visitors stick to the speed limit, especially on public holidays. The specific road where the accident happened is known for speeding and traffic officers should be deployed there with the equipment they need to stop speeders in their tracks.”

Ike Phaahla, the spokesperson for the KNP, confirmed the park was experiencing problems with visitors speeding.
“Visitors should learn to plan their trips carefully so as to avoid speeding before gates close. They should keep their litter in the car and dispose of it at appropriate, designated areas.

“This is an accident which unfortunately ended the life of an endangered species and the individual will have to face the consequences. We continue to urge visitors, colleagues and our service providers to be extra cautious when driving inside the park,” said Phaahla.

Mojapelo said the police are investigating the case.

Lowvelder previously reported that the motorist was arrested at 17:40. This was an error, as the incident happened at 17:40.
