Re: Another Short Long Weekend - September 2014
There's a great BBC TV show called QI (Quite Interesting) that we get on satellite. In one episode they posed the question "where is the best place to find new species of insect?". The answer was surprising - "wherever you are". They then related a story of an entomologist in the UK who decided to do a census in her garden. She found over 500 species of wasps, several of which were previously uncatalogued!Toko wrote:![]()

Saturday 13 September 2014. Croc Bridge.
A nice early start saw us in the queue just after the gates opened. We decided to take my favourite route - S28, S137, S130 and then to LS for some brekkie.
Before we got to the hide, Cory Bustard and Kudu.

At the hide, a Malachite Kingfisher.

And at Duke Waterhole there were lots of people looking up into this tree, we were hoping for a Leopard but it was something else, far more rarely seen that common old Leopards, spot the animal!!!!!!!!

I'm also going to post this on the Spot The Animal thread so the mystery animal will only be revealed when someone guesses correctly
A few metres north of the S130/H4-1 junction there was a traffic jam. This time we were lucky and it was a Leopard!

At Lower Sabie, it's always nice to spend a few minutes at the bird bath.
Greater Blue-Eared Starling.

And Arrowmarked Babblers.

At Sunset Dam, a muster of Yellowbilled Storks.

and on the way back to Croc, a sleepy Elephant.

I know what I'm meant to be looking for in that pic 'cos we went to Dukes especially to find it but had no luck...and can't find it in your pic either!
Lovely leopard sighting
and the birdies are great!
I remember that QI episode....I thought I'd better get into the garden to see what I could find, but haven't got round to it yet!

So, if they are both the same, what are they; Ichneumonidae, Braconidae or something else entirely?

Your macro photography is superb, the detail on those wasps
I think I know what animal is in the tree but I will wait for confirmation.
