The Ground Squirrel has sophisticated vibrissae (whiskers). Hairs are very sensitive to touch and all squirrels have long, stiff hairs, called vibrissae, dedicated to the detection of tactile stimuli. There are a dozen to two dozen vibrissae on the side of the nose above the mouth and three to six vibrissae on the side of the cheek. Some are also above the eyes. Unlike normal hair, vibrissae grow from hair follicles that are 5-6 times larger than the normal pelage hair follicle, and in rodents, special brain regions process impulses caused by the movement from these hairs.
