DAY 2 - 17 APRIL 2015 - ROUND ABOUT CLARENS AND GOLDEN GATE NATIONAL PARK. Part 2/5

ASHE RIVER OUTFLOW.

We had no idea what this until we googled it so we went to have a look.

This is where an underground tunnel carries water from the Katse Dam in Lesotho to the Ash River near Clarens. The tunnel is 82 kms long, 4.8 metres in diameter, goes under 6 rivers and carries the water at a rate of 18 cubic metres per second. This tunnel took from 1991 to 1996 to complete. It has turned the Ash River which was a dry stream into a river on which they now do white water rafting. The Ash River eventually joins up with the Vaal River and supplements the supply of water to the Vaal Dam.

This is the outflow from the tunnel. The water is 3.5 metres deep as it comes out of the tunnel.

A section of the tunnel placed as a memorial to the three workers who died whilst working there.

Some idiot thought that he should try and put the piece back. :o0ps: :o0ps:

DAY 2 - 17 APRIL 2015 - ROUND ABOUT CLARENS AND GOLDEN GATE NATIONAL PARK. Part 3/5

This mountain overlooks Clarens which was founded in 1912. The Titanic sank in 1912 so this rock formation is aptly called "Titanic".

Some photos of the scenery and animals in Golden Gate National Park. The nice thing is that entrance is free.

We continue our photographic journey of Golden Gate National Park.

We stopped at the Vultures Restaurant for 90 minutes but all we saw for a fleeting moment was this crow.

We then continued our trip through the Park.

Goodbye Golden Gate. You were truly amazing.

Just before reaching Clarens we turned onto the Fouriesburg road to get a photo of:

Mushroom Rock.

A little church built in 1932 opposite our cottage.

And finally for Part 5 and the Clarens area:

Clarens Lake in the late afternoon.
