Second Hand Canon 100-400mm Lens

Post by Flutterby »

The Brat's current lens is getting a little bit old. The zoom isn't great, there is no optical stabilizer and a few of the settings on the camera aren't working, so we are thinking of getting him an upgrade. He wants something a bit bigger, but of course the Brat demands the best, and has his eye on some secondhand 100-400mm Canon lenses and the price isn't too bad. His body is a Canon 700D. Do you think we are looking at the right lens? And is it as good as they say? :-)

I hear that it's a decent lens - one thing that originally put me off was that the zoom is via push/pull rather than rotating the lens barrel. Not sure if that would be anything to worry about - I'm sure you get used to it very quickly.

Might the Tamron be an option? It's obviously much cheaper than the current canon 100-400

Thanks guys. I have the Sigma 150-500 which I'm very happy with, so maybe we should look at that or the Tamron. -O- Will do a bit more reading. ;-)

Sigma have just released a 150-600mm lens which is about the same price as the Tamron at around R14,000 - I haven't seen any reviews of the Sigma yet so I can't comment. The Sigma Sports 150-600mm lens is reported to be even better than the Tamron but is nearly twice the price at around R26,000.

Don't even consider the old Sigma 150-500, it's a good lens but the Tamron is a huge improvement.

Get yourself the Tamron (or maybe even the Sigma Sport 150-600), and give him your old lens...

I,ve been reading all the reviews and the old Canon 100-400 MK1 is now out classed by the new sigma and tamron lenses, they are sharper and quicker. Also the price for the 2nd hand lens is between R9000,00 and R12000,00 for a 400 , where you can get a new Tamron for about R140000 and it's a 600mm with the crop it can be as high as 900mm. The new Canon 100-400mk11 is a different story but is around the same price as the sigma sport.
