‘As julle weer sien, myn hulle in wildtuin’

Lameur stone has been there for years, they see to get slasto from there. I used to go to Letaba ranch in 90's, think it cost R2 for entrance and R5 for vehicle. It used to have some nice camps inside there before it was handed over to old homelands to run. Most of camps got closed and vandalized except main one, but it was very run down. We used to go there and find a spot along river and braai. Sad the way it is now. O/ O/

Chief Castro says Letaba Ranch is a provincial reserve which should be run by the Department, and wants to know why no action is taken. Makhuva says that before Saffies know it, the mines will be in the Park. The community wants to conserve the area, but now it is being destroyed.

According to conservationists, the mine pushed over the fence with their vehicles about a year ago, and began mining silicon and stone. Eventually a 3km road was bulldozed, and trucks move in and out daily.

The 5 chiefs have been sending letters to .gov for a year, and want to know who authorised it, who benefits from it, and who will rehabilitate it, with no result.

Jood Latsky of the mining company says all is above board, with mineral rights, mining rights, water license and Departmental approval, also for the gate.

He wants R200 000 in compensation if the mine has to move.

Matome from Dept. says they, Kruger, the miner and the community are discussing the situation.
