Re: Dog Day Afternoons.
A certain courage or rather recklessness is needed to cross that old wooden bridge. It looks very nice but not at all safe

The bridge was a bit rickety, but solid enough to cross. In reality, it must have been reinforced to take my hefty weight.
Thanks Pumbaa. More to come of them when we get back there at the end of the trip.

Car trouble for an AW member? Surely not!
Mournful buffalo...
Quite the adventurers, you two!
looks like indigenous wood for the bridges, with some commercial poles later?

Car troubles? You have not heard the half of it RP.
It was sad to hear that buffalo's plight, but Crocs have to eat. Just glad it was not me out there in the water.
Aye, we do get into some scrapes in way out places.
The old bridges had indigenous wood, the new ones commercial cra...poles.
Thanks Nan. It was fun crossing those twigs.

Re: Dog Day Afternoons.
Love those bridges in Moremi and then either muddy or sandy sections that one must negotiate.
Did you make use of Tracks4Africa maps? There is an upper and lower road from North gate to Xakanaxa. One close to Hippo Pools with long water sections to cross and the lower one that is drier in June / June but as you note quite sandy before the airfield.
Wonder what got to the poor buffalo. Luckily haven't seen crocs close to the came except for Hippo pools.

We made a bit of an error. We asked if we could use the camp freezer at Mogotlho. J went to fetch the meat before we left, but got into a conversation with one of the camp staff. We were miles away when he remembered that he had forgotten to fetch our meat! I hope the staff there enjoyed a free braai on us.
O no. Not nice to loose your meat, but am sure they've enjoyed it. Looks like the water levels were not that high when you went. Was it in June? We could not reached Khwai village in July 2010 due to the 20 or 40 year record floods that caused most roads to be inaccessible.

Hi BJ.
We went in June.
Yes, we bought a Garmin & loaded the T4A into it. I also bought a T4A proper old fashioned map, as I still like to pore over them to plan routes, see what's ahead etc.
Was wet in places, but mostly sand. You seem to know exactly where we got stuck.
We took the north road, but did not detour to Hippo Pools. We had to backtrack at one water crossing, but the detour was a small one. Everywhere else was dry.
If you do go to Dijara, do not cross the river just before Mbabane. It's deep with muddy holes. There is a detour just before that on the right.
The water had started to flow, but had not yet flooded out of the deeper channels.

So poring over maps is what Dumbledore does on the cold winter evenings!
Still not sure about this version of Khama...and no pics of the regular wild dog procession in camp...
