Story 01- Kick-off with Reindeer in Kruger or ?
*** Travel Tales ***
Trip to Kruger NP 2016 (October – November) New series of Stories
01 – Reindeer in Kruger
Hi all,
After some delay by a defect PC … let’s rolllllllllllllll
We have been in Kruger in October/November. We spent all three weeks in the northern regions of the park. Starting in Letaba , moving to Shingwedzi and Mopani and back to Letaba. This time we travelled from Amsterdam to Johannesburg by KLM and from there we took a flight to Phalaborwa, picked up our rental car (with a free upgrade…smileee) and after some shopping we entered the park.
Because it’s almost Christmas and in the park there are no Reindeer so I was thinking of a first story about Sable , to get the right feeling for this time of jingle bells.
It was November 6th , the day after a big surprise by seeing animals we did not really expect here… will tell you much more about this later on.
November 6th , staying in Mopani and searching for Tuskers. Late afternoon drive, starting at Mooiplaas waterhole, no tuskers, going along Nshawu, no tuskers, to Tihongonyeni , no tuskers… then what to do… and decided to follow the Old Main road, plenty of Buffalo but no sign of a tusker. I got to the T junction and because of the time I had to go back direction Mopani.
Just on the main road and I saw a very nice group of Sable. They were on their way to Nkokodzi waterhole.
I turned the car, engine off to have a good view on them and hoping these shy animals did not run away.
They did not…
First photo… they were curious who was looking at them
-

-
And the others were looking too.
-

-
All together I could count 14 of them.
-

-
The light at this time of the afternoon made them even more beautiful
-

-
They were standing there for some minutes. Looking around and when they were sure it was safe enough they slowly moved to the waterhole. Next picture with the big male and look at those horns… impressive
-

-
and
-

-
I could not see them well enough to make photos when they were near the waterhole so I was waiting and hoping they came back. They did and walked to the main road …
The big male was the first one getting near the road. What more do you need? Sable, Big male , sunset and no one around to disturb this sighting.
-

-
After the big male took off , they all moved quickly to the other side of the road…
-

-
and
-

-
Just before they disappeared in the bush I could make one more picture and with a some “fantasy” it looks a bit like a Christmas card.
-

-
We hope you enjoyed this first story and much more to come…

Beautiful Kruger "reindeers"
I love how their fur is gleaming in the sun

God put me on earth to accomplish a certain amount of things. Right now I'm so far behind that I'll never die.

Great, aat!
Rare place to see them, and a nice big herd!
Yes, they don't seem bothered by drought at all...the area looks dry!
