Day 5 – 17th August 2016 (Continued)

Between Sunset dam and Lubyelubye we spotted a group of males sleeping in the river bed. We realised that the H4-1 had come back online..

And the lionesses were sleeping on Lubyelubye rocks

And about 3kms further up a Leopard in tree, again it was a leopard H4-1 sighting with 100s of cars. It was 14h30 and we had been on the road since 06h30, so we squeezed our way through, snapping a few pictures on the way.

Luckily the Leopard awoke as we passed, so we could get a few pics, then yawned and passed out again.

Just before the N’Watimhiri Causeway we spotted a lions off to the side, with vultures in the trees, we assumed a kill but this early in the afternoon, they were settled down and not moving

Lisbeth: We work hard for the Leopards :-0

Alf: We try avoid the traffic, and do not go to the park during government school holidays.

Day 5 – 17th August 2016 (Continued)

It had been another long day and we had many good sightings, so the late afternoon drive was just a cruise to Delaporte waterhole. Here there was a huge baboon that was bullying all the other baboons

We spotted a mother and baby off to the one side, she was very protective of the baby, and ran whenever the bully moved in her direction

Only when she went for a drink did we notice that the baby was dead.

It was a sad but interesting scene to watch playing out. As she placed the dead baby on the ground to drink the bully came rushing over, she had to return to save the corpse and rush away from him

After we returned from the park, I found the below photo posted on one of the Kruger Facebook sites, it was also from Delaporte waterhole and take two weeks after our trip, so it looks like the mother was still carrying the dead baby for a few weeks after we spotted her.

We chilled watching the goings on until time was up, then headed back for the evening braai.

Incredible that the baboon mother went on keeping the dead baby for such a long time :-?
