Wow, a fantastic leopard sighting at DeLaporte and great pics also.

I love your narration and really got "into" the sighting just reading

I'm back!! Happy New Year to all. Thanks nan, Flutterby, Lisbeth, RP, Pumbaa, ExFemm, Mel and BC for your comments and feedback. It certainly encourages me to keep on writing. $\O$

Regarding Lake Panic, I can understand everyone's opinions on the place. We visited twice and it was packed both days. People were generally quiet and respectful, but it still did not feel as peaceful as we would have liked. However during our visits the birdlife was fantastic so I wouldn't hesitate to go back again.

Saturday 26th August - Delaporte Day! continued...

For no particular reason we decided to cruise down the H1-1 and H3 to Kwaggaspan and back, then return to Lower Sabie along the H4-1. For something different we had decided to jump on a Sunset Drive so wanted to be back at camp in time for that.

All was quiet at Delaporte as we cruised past. In fact, the entire drive south was quiet. But there was a treat in store for us at Kwaggaspan, as we arrived to find this Saddle-billed Stork just chilling off in the grass. It looked lost!

With nothing much happening at the waterhole we turned back for Skukuza. The H3 was again quiet, but just south of Delaporte an oncoming car flagged us down. They were quite distressed as they told us about an injured Impala around the bend and asked us to please report it at Skukuza. We drove forward and located the poor animal on the roadside. I won't include pictures, but the injuries to its back leg seemed consistent with being hit by a car, and the animal needed to be put down. We took a couple of pics so we could show staff at Skukuza, then drove on.

Not too far north of Delaporte on the H1-1 an animal I was desperate to find for Lyca strode out of the bushes - a Nyala!

Lyca was suitably impressed by the beauty of this species, and the encounter helped to lift our mood after the horrific Impala sighting just a few minutes earlier.

We called in to Skukuza reception and reported the location of the injured Impala before continuing on towards Lower Sabie.

So horrible to see an injured animal.

I hope the rangers dealt with it quickly.

Ja, nyala are expanding their range in the central and southern areas...they don't really belong there, IMO!
