KNP Rangers honoured at Rangers Day
“As rangers, you are faced with a phenomenal task every time you put on that uniform and go out there to protect our country’s heritage,” said MEC Petrus Ngomane in honour of Rangers day
8 mins ago
SKUKUZA – Kruger National Park (KNP) management and staff members held a ceremony in honour of its ranger corps on Monday. They paid tribute to those who put their lives on the line on a daily basis for the welfare of the park.
This was part of the park’s World Ranger Day celebrations.
“Rangers are a key force in protecting the wildlife, and are fundamental to maintaining the integrity of this national park,” said KNP managing executive, Glenn Phillips.
“The job of a ranger, with its associated dangers, needs men and women who keep focus out there in the bush. Very few people have the courage and necessary skills to perform this important task other than rangers,” he added.
Activities on the day included a rangers’ drill, a guard of honour, wreath-laying ceremony, and the recognition of one of the oldest living retired KNP rangers, LCpl Willie Nkuna.
MEC for community safety, security and liaison, Petrus Ngomane, urged communities and conservation institutions to work together to eradicate environmental crime for the enhancement of the province.
“As rangers, you are faced with a phenomenal task every time you put on that uniform and go out there to protect our country’s heritage,” Ngomane said.
“The four ranger regions depicted on this Ranger Monument should serve as a constant reminder of posterity, and I want to express our appreciation for your continuous service, dedication and commitment,” he added.
Ngomane called on all to take the opportunity to express the community’s gratitude to the families of the rangers.
Phillips echoed the MEC’s sentiments, and said that they appreciate the sacrifices that are made by the rangers daily.
