A buffalo herd of a few hundred left free fertiliser at Skukuza Golf Club on Tuesday night, October 3.

Jean Rossouw, greenkeeper at the golf club, told Lowvelder that he went onto the course to remove the flags in the afternoon as they do every day after closing play.

“We did hear rumours during the day that there was a buffalo herd close to the golf club, but I had not seen it when we went to remove the flags.”

Rossouw said that he went back to the greens later that night to move water sprinklers around when he spotted the herd. He managed to shoo the bovines off the greens.

The herd returned during the night or early morning, and they left free fertiliser on the fairways.

“They also walked over the greens but there was no damage done. We used a drag mat and machines to spread the dung, at least we’ve got free fertiliser,” he said.

According to Rossouw, this is one of the issues they have to deal with, having a golf course in Kruger Park.

“We have got a whole lot of other problems to overcome, unlike other golf courses. But it is a nice problem. It is nice to have animals on the greens. It is nice that the course is not fenced. And it is nice to see this sort of sightings as a golfer. It is the only golf course in the world where you can observe the Big 5. That’s why it’s the wildest golf course in the world,” Rossouw said.

Lions, leopards, elephants and buffalos are regular visitors to the course.
